My mom is part of a research study called "Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion" You can read about it at CTV's website.
This study we have been told can increase the chance of finding a suitable donor since they will accept donors who are not just brain dead and will also use lungs that may be damaged. Car accidents are one such situation where lungs are normally not donated if the lungs are damaged in some way. Although that is not at all why we signed up for the program since there are obvious risks to trying a therapy that is so new. We signed up for it though because we recognize that our success or failure in a study like this will definitely benefit others who are going through a similar life saving event in their life.
